Permaculture can be defined as “a design process that helps us to design intelligent systems which meet human needs whilst enhancing biodiversity, reducing our impact on the planet, and creating a fairer world for us all.” The focus in managing our 5 acres has been on the “enhancing biodiversity” element of this definition and so this is very much an Earth Care process. Permaculture design tries to reflect natural systems, that are complex and adaptive, which means that what you had in your head for the design is not what nature creates for you in the end. Nevertheless, applying the Fair Shares ethic has meant that the initial decisions and designs have always included nature and how to support the more than human world.
