For a number of years I’d tried to convert an area of grassland into a wildflower meadow that would be sustainable and provide interest, as well as a source of food and shelter for a variety of animals, thus increasing the biodiversity of the land. I wanted some of the plants to provide herbal supplies for teas, food flavourings and medicinal products as well as for art and aesthetics.
The location of the design is my property in North Wales. This field on the edge of a village close to Offa’s Dyke, was used for pasture for keeping horses and sheep until a few years ago when trees were planted to the north and south.
This project was personal although the benefits would be shared with other visitors such as Wwoofers and the seeds would be collected for my own land and community areas.
The project started officially on 16th October 2024 and finished on 21st August 2025. It was land based using the VOBREDIMET design framework. It used Mollison and Slay’s principles for guidance in the design and the final evaluation but also uses Holmgren’s Principles to evaluate at the outset.
