I am a permaculture designer, teacher and practitioner and have been creating permaculture-guided spaces for many years. For several years I co-ran my own permaculture garden design business called Patch of the Planet, which seeked to design and create gardens harmony with nature, in North-West England. We created a wide range of garden spaces for private clients and community groups, in spaces large and small and with budgets likewise. Prior to that I worked in social justice and environmental charities for 20-or-so years, including as CEO of The Orchard Project, Head of Activism at Friends of the Earth and a campaigner with CND. I now run a permaculture smallholding project in Pembrokeshire with my family (also called Patch of the Planet, or Llecyn o'r Blaned yn Cymraeg), where I teach permaculture and practice it on a daily basis. Our project aims to apply and experiment with lower impacts ways of living, simplicity, localisation and a good degree of self-sufficiency. From here we run a vegetable garden to sell food locally, an art-from-nature project called Wyld Arts, a small campsite and a tree nursery specialising in trees that will help build resilience into productive land in a time of climate disruption. I also host Permaculture Design Courses here, alongside other permaculture and land-based courses.

Skills, technical expertise and areas of interest:I am particularly interested in integration of trees into landscapes large and small, as well as looking at how trees, and shrubs, can play central roles in building soil and system health. I have sound knowledge and experience in managing fruit trees and orchards and in tree pruning and grafting and run training on these topics. I have very broad experience of garden design and the implementation of designs, on budgets small to large. In particular I'm experienced in finding designs that meet the needs of the clients whilst not compromising on either the needs of the natural world or the necessity to use resources lightly. I have worked with and in community groups for a quarter of a century and ahve trained and designed for them, as well as being involved in and sometimes leading local community campaigns. So I understand how community groups work and very much enjoy working with them.

I have a wide breadth of design experience and have designed and implemented community orchards, forest gardens, family gardens, disability accessible spaces, climbing structures and broadscale and detailed designs of larger areas.
