This project continues work that started with my first Permaculture Project in 2023 when I helped set up a Go Green Group (GGG) to undertake the various green projects in the community of Trelawnyd, North Wales. Part of this project included taking care of the gardens around the Memorial Hall in the centre of the village which had been landscaped approximately 25 years earlier.
The new design includes a colourful flower border, maintenance of the grassed area with more spring bulbs, a section for drought tolerant plants and poppies close to the memorial, a wider path to increase access, a water butt to enable plants to be watered in drought periods and a compost area behind the building to ensure all plant waste is recycled to benefit the soil and plants.
The location of the project is a garden around a hall in a village in North Wales. The clients are the Trelawnyd Community Association which leases the hall from the community council.
The design framework used for this design is CEAP: Collect the information; Evaluate the information; Apply permaculture principles and Plan a schedule of implementation, maintenance and feedback.
Mollison and Slay’s Permaculture Design Principles were used for the planning and were suggested for part of the evaluation process. Tools included maps and artist’s impressions of the proposed planting as well as soil tests, questionnaire, mindmap and client checklist.
The project started in March 2025 and the design was completed in February 2026. Implementation and maintenance will hopefully continue later this year subject to funding.
